What Makes Family Dentistry Special?

A family dentist offers the same comprehensive, quality services as a general dentist, but instead of focusing on adults, family dentists welcome and care for everyone in your family, regardless of age. Their experience working with all ages allows them to tailor treatment to the needs of each person at their life stage, and to make dental care comfortable and fun for everyone.

Are There Benefits to Visiting a Family Dentist?

Unlike pediatric dentists, who only see children, a family dentist can continue to care for young patients as they grow into adulthood and beyond. This continuity of care helps to build trust and make it easier to catch problems early on that a new dentist might miss.

Having a family dentist to care for everyone in your family also helps the dentist to get a big-picture view of your dental health. This creates opportunities to identify common problems stemming from genetic or lifestyle factors, and to provide more personalized treatment for you and all your loved ones.

Protecting Your Gums with Periodontics

Our gums are an essential part of our smile, and yet countless people develop gum disease each year without even realizing it. Periodontics centers on detecting and treating gum disease at every stage to protect and restore your smile.

How Does Gum Disease Start?

Gum disease typically happens when plaque that doesn’t get clean from brushing hardens along the gumline. The gums become irritated and inflamed, leading to gingivitis.

At this stage, the gum disease can be reversed, but if left untreated, it advances to periodontitis. This stage is much more severe, developing pockets of infection beneath the gum line. Beyond this stage, in advanced periodontitis, the gums recede, the jawbone shrinks, and teeth lose their support and may eventually fall out or need extraction.

Other factors can also cause or worsen gum disease, including:

  • A high-sugar diet
  • Dry mouth
  • Certain medications
  • Smoking and tobacco use
  • Certain diseases, especially diabetes

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

The best treatment for gum disease depends on what stage it’s in. With gingivitis, professional cleanings, good hygiene at home, and a healthy, nutritious diet may be enough to restore the gums to health. The more advanced the disease, however, the more intensive treatments must be.

Scaling and Root Planing – This treatment is also called a “deep cleaning” because it focuses on removing bacteria and plaque below the gumline. First, the hardened plaque and calculus is removed with special tools from the enamel and tooth roots. Then the root surface is smoothed out with special tools to prevent bacteria from latching on and to help the gums reattach to the tooth.

Antibacterial & Antibiotic Treatment – Oral and topical antibacterial treatments can be used to cleanse infection. A course of oral antibiotics may also be prescribed depending on the level of infection.

Advanced Treatment – If the gums have been severely damaged or receded, more invasive care may be needed. This can include surgical solutions such as pocket reduction and gum grafts to close and rebuild the gumline.

7 Signs You Need Gum Care

Paying close attention to your gums is an important part of oral care. If you notice any of these symptoms, be sure to discuss it with our team.

  1. Red or inflamed gums
  2. Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  3. Sensitivity to heat or cold
  4. Aching when biting or chewing
  5. Persistent bad breath
  6. A receding gum line
  7. Abscesses on the gums

A Straighter, Healthier Smile with Orthodontics in Hillsboro & Tanasbourne

Orthodontics is designed to help straighten teeth and create ideal bite alignment. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, with braces being the most well-known. When you or your child come to our office for an orthodontic consultation, we examine all possible treatment options and look for the one that will have the best possible effect on your bite.

What’s the Best Age for Orthodontics?

We generally advise an orthodontic evaluation for kids around the age of seven. This is when their first adult teeth have come in, and we can get a good understanding of how their smile is developing. If needed, we can start to guide their dental growth through appliances or braces.

Children and teens often have the easiest time with orthodontics, since their jaws are still developing and are receptive to treatment. However, orthodontics can be effective at any age, whether you’re 12, 22, or 52!

Types of Orthodontic Treatments

Our office provides orthodontic options with traditional braces and Invisalign® clear braces. We’ll work with you to help you find the option that best addresses your needs, goals, and lifestyle.

Traditional Braces

The classic bracket-and-wire braces have been used for centuries, and have been perfected into the braces we offer today. These braces can correct anything from mild to advanced misalignments, providing healthier smiles for people of all ages.

Invisalign Braces

These innovative braces use a series of trays custom-shaped to fit your smile and gently realign your teeth. The removable trays make eating and brushing simple, and the slim, clear design is almost invisible. Invisalign braces are a convenient and effective choice for adults and responsible teens with mild to moderate alignment issues.

Dental Implants Help Rebuild Smiles

Missing teeth don’t have to mean an end to a confident smile or the life you love. With dental implants, you can regain the form, function, and aesthetics of your smile while also protecting your oral and overall health.

Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that replaces both the root and crown of the tooth. This provides stability and preserves your jaw structure without any of your remaining teeth needing to be altered or removed. Whether you’re missing a single tooth, several, or all of your teeth, implants could be a viable option for you.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you’re missing teeth, you could be a great candidate for dental implant placement. The most important factors are your jawbone strength and oral health.

When teeth are lost, the jawbone loses chewing pressure and starts to shrink. Implants need good bone support to withstand daily chewing pressure, so it’s important to have an implant evaluation not long after losing a tooth. Gum disease can also pose a risk to bone health, as will smoking or tobacco use. Addressing these issues before implant placement will help ensure a successful and long-lasting treatment.

What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants in Hillsboro & Tanasbourne

Implant placement typically happens in four stages. First is the evaluation and planning stage, where we examine the number of implants needed and the optimal placement. Any preliminary procedures, like bone grafting, can be done at this point.

Once everything is ready, we can place the implants. Our experienced dentists use state-of-the-art imaging to help us determine and implement the precise placement to give your new teeth the best support.

After the implants are placed, your jaw will need time to heal. During this phase, the bone gradually fuses to the implant, securing it in place. Finally, your implant can be topped with your custom crown, bridge, or denture.

You can use your new teeth to speak, eat, and smile normally, and no special maintenance is needed. Simply brush and floss normally, and make sure to come in for your regular checkups!

Do I Need Root Canal Therapy for My Tooth Pain?

If you’re experiencing sharp or throbbing pain in a tooth, it could be a sign that root canal therapy is needed. Tooth decay that has reached the inner tooth will allow bacteria to infect the nerve and soft tissue, often causing intense pain. A root canal treatment works to save the tooth by removing the infection, cleansing the root canals, and stabilizing the inner tooth.

Is Root Canal Treatment Safe?

The concept of a root canal treatment can seem frightening, but this procedure today actually has a high success rate and is considered safe for your oral health. This treatment is often the only way to preserve the tooth and avoid an extraction. We use precise imaging to help us ensure that your treatment is thorough and effective, and that your tooth is safe and will no longer cause you pain.

Improving Your Dental Treatment with Sedation

We know that some patients feel anxious when going to the dentist, whether they need advanced treatment or even a routine cleaning. We try to be patient, open, and compassionate with everyone who visits our office so that you feel comfortable and safe. If you need a little extra help feeling relaxed during your treatment, we can help with sedation dentistry.

We offer two forms of conscious sedation: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation. Both of these options leave you conscious and able to respond, but without feeling nervous about your treatment. Simply let us know before your visit if these treatments would be helpful to you, and we’ll be happy to do all we can to make your treatment a positive and healthy experience.
